What is Divorce Mediation
Divorce mediation is an alternative to contentious litigation. Mediation allows you and your spouse to control those issues that are important to you and your family. During mediation, you and your spouse meet with a neutral party, either a certified mediator or a divorce attorney, and negotiate the issues that are contested in your divorce. A mediator negotiates all issues relating to custody, parenting time, alimony, child support, and equitable distribution. In mediation, as opposed to litigation, you are in control of the outcome of your divorce and are not bound by the laws or statues of New Jersey with respect to the distribution of assets or support payments. Mediation affords parties complete flexibility and an ability for everyone to have some control over the process. The goal of mediation is allow communication between parties as opposed to an adversarial and protracted litigation. Furthermore, a mediated divorce is much cheaper as the adversarial component is missing and the parties are working together towards a resolution.
