A court approved mediator is a mediator who has met the rigorous requirements as set forth by the Courts of New Jersey. In order to become a court approved mediator you must complete 40 hours of training as set forth in the State of New Jersey's program for mediation of economic aspects of family cases. Lawyers who have achieved this designation are permitted to have their names appear on a roster of approved mediators that is utilized by the courts in each county in New Jersey. This roster of mediators is utilized by the divorce lawyers and the family law Judges in selecting mediators to resolve ongoing divorce cases.
The roster of court approved mediators consists primarily of experienced divorce lawyers who are also divorce mediators. Private attorneys make up the vast majority of the lawyers who are on the approved list.
Mediation is favored by most Judges as a cost-effective way for couples to navigate their way through the divorce process.
