Divorce Rate in New Jersey

Posted by Vincent C. DeLuca | Dec 28, 2020 | 0 Comments

Although it seems as though celebrities get divorced at a much higher rate than non-celebrities, that is simply not the case.  The facts are that about 40 to 50 percent of all married couples in the United States divorce.  The divorce rate for subsequent marriages is even higher.  The United States has the 6th highest divorce rate in the world.  Every 13 seconds there is a one divorce in the United States.  This equates to over 2,400,000 divorces a year.

These statistics may rise after COVID -19 self- isolation.  The Monmouth and Ocean County Divorce lawyers at Villani & DeLuca have noticed an increase in filings since the onset of the pandemic.  Spending excessive amounts of time in quarantine with an individual you do not really get along has led to an increase in divorce filings.

Since the onset of the pandemic, a lot of divorces and divorce mediations have taken place virtually by way of zoom.  The court system has been forced to adapt to the ever-changing legal landscape as a result of the pandemic.  The number of divorce filings was over 30% higher from March through June as compared with 2019.  Stress, unemployment, working from home, home schooling children, and illness have all caused the divorce rate to increase exponentially.

Online divorces in New Jersey

As a result of the recent pandemic and the new protocols being implemented by the Courts, in some ways it is easier now to obtain a divorce and the costs have been reduced because of the suspension of in-court proceedings.  An online divorce is less expensive as there is no travel time being charged by the attorney to and from court and there is no time spent in court waiting for the Judge to hear your case.  An additional advantage of the availability of obtaining an online divorce, or divorce on the papers, is that the time required to finalize an uncontested divorce has been drastically reduced.  If both spouses cooperate it is feasible that their divorce may be finalized in less than two months' time.
